The Scottish Hernia Centre offers a comprehensive service from diagnosis through to surgery for all hernia patients.

With traditional surgical methods, up to 10% of hernias can recur after surgery. However, with modern techniques and in the experienced hands of surgeons at the Scottish Hernia Centre, recurrence rates of less than 1% can be expected.

Richard Molloy, Consultant Surgeon is one of the founders and the senior surgeon of the Scottish Hernia Centre. He has a special interest in hernia surgery and is committed to providing the highest standards of care in the management of all types of hernia. He uses the most modern methods of investigation and treatment of patients with hernias.

About Ross Hall

RossHall hospital is Scotland’s largest Private Hospital. The centre boasts state of the art facilities, with the latest imaging techniques. Situated in Hillington, it provides easy access for car and train.

Ross Hall hospital combines the old and new in one integrated site. The original baronial style Ross Hall house was built by James Cowan who occupied it from 1877 until his death in 1907 aged 77 years. It was subsequently sold to Glasgow and West of Scotland Commercial College in 1944 and the Scottish Hotel School was based at Ross Hall from 1948 to 1981. Glasgow Independant Hospital purchased Ross Hall form the University in 1981 and work began on a modern 100 bed extension.

Ross Hall opened as Scotland’s largest hospital in November 1983 and subsequent investment has developed Ross Hall hospital into a modern hospital with 4 operating theatres, a dedicated endoscopy suite and state of the art imaging facility, a fully equipped intensive unit and extensive inpatient facilities. The original baronial Ross Hall building is still used for consulting rooms and offices and visitors use magnificent Victorian period staircases with original wood panelling overseen by stunning stain glass windows.

The estate of Ross Hall takes its name from the Ross family of Hawkhead, who originally owned the land. Ross Hall was acquired in the late 18th Century by Peter Murdoch, a Glasgow merchant, who laid out the grounds, planting trees and creating several straight and serpentine green walks. The avenue of lime trees near the river may have been planted at this time.

He continues to research and publish on Colorectal, General Surgery & Hernia topics. In addition to his scientific publications, he is a co-author/editor of textbooks on Colorectal and General Surgery.

How to Arrange an Appointment

Usually the first step is to obtain a referral to the Centre from your doctor. However, this is not absolutely necessary and we are happy to see you directly. However, some insurance companies prefer that patients are referred by their own General Practitioner. You can make a direct appointment by contacting Catherine on 0141 620 3687.

Richard Molloy at the Scottish Hernia Centre has consultation appointments each day Monday & Friday at Ross Hall.

During your initial consultation, a full medical history is taken. You will undergo a thorough physical examination. We will discuss options to treat your hernia and you will be able to ask questions specific to your case.

Paying for treatment

For patients without healthcare insurance, consultation can be confirmed at the time of booking. A dedicated page outlining the costs of consultation and hernia surgery is available here. The Centre also offers very attractive all-inclusive fixed price packages for those that do not have medical insurance.

Patients with insurance with all the major insurers (BUPA, AXA-PPP, Aviva, PruHealth, WPA, Cigna and most others) are covered to undergo surgery at the Centre.
